Product Description
Cold Shrink Termination up to 42 kV
A cold shrink termination is a complete, factory-engineered cable termination that installs without any heat. Inside the kit is a pre-expanded silicone sleeve held on a removable core; when the core is pulled out, the sleeve contracts at ambient temperature to clamp the cable under constant radial pressure - sealing, insulating and stress-controlling the termination in one operation.
The WLN (indoor) and WLW (outdoor) series cover medium-voltage cables up to 42 kV - from 1 kV LV up through 6.35/11, 8.7/15, 12/20, 18/30 and 20.8/36 kV - for 1- to 5-core cable, with outdoor kits fitted with rain sheds (see the diagram call-outs). Each kit is a matched set of the four functional parts of a termination: the environmental top seal, the external housing, the stress cone and the earth connection.
Terminations can be ordered as standard kits (without lugs) or complete kits, and components for other cable types are available on request.

Cold shrink vs heat shrink - why specify cold shrink?
All the heat-shrink products in this range recover by heat (90–130 °C) from a torch or hot-air gun. A cold-shrink termination works the other way round: the sleeve is supplied pre-expanded on a core and is released by pulling the core, so it recovers with no heat at all. For a terminator or an installer, that changes the whole economics of the job:
No open flame - no torch, no hot-work permit, no scorching risk to nearby cable, glands or switchgear. Safer in confined spaces, tunnels and plant rooms.
No skill-sensitive heating - the recovery pressure is set by the factory, not by how evenly the installer waved a torch, so every termination is consistent.
Faster and cleaner - pull the core and the sleeve is fully recovered; less time, fewer reworks.
Constant radial pressure for life - the elastic memory of the silicone keeps the interface under pressure as the cable heats and cools, which is what keeps out moisture over years of thermal cycling.
The four functional parts are designed as a system:
Environmental top sealing treatment - a three-step seal against entry of the external environment at the conductor/lug end.
Excellent external housing - imported LSR (liquid silicone rubber) with excellent hydrophobicity and great anti-tracking property for power safety.
Stress control - the stress cone uses well-designed geometric analysis to smooth out the high-stress region where the screen is cut back.
Earth connection - a solderless earth connection joins the metal screen or armour to ground; for cables with a wire screen, copper wires are embedded in the sealing mastic to prevent corrosion by moisture ingress.

Key features & benefits
No heat required - recovers by core release at ambient temperature; no torch, no flame, no hot-work permit.
Complete solution - top seal + LSR housing + stress cone + earth connection in one matched kit.
Imported LSR housing - excellent hydrophobicity and anti-tracking for long-term outdoor and polluted service.
Designed stress cone - geometric stress control at the screen cut-back; no separate stress-grading accessory to fit.
Solderless earth connection - reliable screen/armour earthing; copper-wire-screen cables use copper wires embedded in sealing mastic to resist corrosion.
Wide voltage coverage - 1 kV to 42 kV in one series.
1- to 5-core - LV kits for 1–5 core; MV kits (6.35/11 to 26/35 kV) in 1- and 3-core.
Indoor and outdoor - WLN for indoor, WLW for outdoor (rain-shed housing for wet service).
Flexible ordering - standard kits (without lugs) or complete kits; other cable types on request.
Applications
Outdoor MV cable terminations - increasing creepage distance on overhead-line and substation terminations
Polluted / coastal sites - sites with salt, dust or industrial pollution where creepage is critical
Rain-exposed terminations - breaking up surface water films to prevent rain flashover
3-core cable terminations - the 3-core shed seals and sheds over three cores at once
Upgrading existing terminations - adding sheds to raise the creepage class of an installed termination
Utility, railway and EPC outdoor installations - outdoor distribution and substation accessories
How the cold-shrink termination differs from the heat-shrink range
| Product | Type | Technology | What it is |
|---|---|---|---|
| WLN / WLW - Cold Shrink Termination | Termination kit | Cold shrink (core release, no heat) | A complete termination for MV cable up to 42 kV |
| WRSYL - Stress Control Tube | Heat-shrink component | Heat shrink (90–130 °C) | Semi-conductive stress-grading sleeve |
| WRSJG - Anti-Tracking Tube | Heat-shrink component | Heat shrink | Anti-tracking insulating sleeve |
| WDWT - Semi-conductive Dual Layer Tube | Heat-shrink component | Heat shrink | Insulation + screen rebuild for joints |
| WRSHG / WRSZT / WRSFM / WRSSQ | Heat-shrink components / shaped parts | Heat shrink | Protective tube, breakout, end cap, rain shed |
In short: everything else on the site is a heat-shrink component you assemble onto a cable. This is a cold-shrink kit that is the termination - a factory-engineered system installed by core release, with no heat. That is why this page is written around technology and kit selection, not sleeve dimensions.
How to select the right termination kit
Establish the cable voltage class - read the U0 (U) of the cable (e.g. 12/20 (24) kV) and pick the matching block in the selection table.
Confirm the core count - 1-, 2-, 3-, 4- or 5-core (MV kits from 6 kV up cover 1- and 3-core).
Measure the cable cross-section and the diameter over insulation - both must fall in the row for the kit. The diameter over insulation is the deciding figure - it is the surface the sleeve must seal and grip.
Choose indoor or outdoor - WLN for indoor, WLW for outdoor (rain-shed housing).
Decide the kit form - standard kit (without lugs) or complete kit (with lugs).
Check the nominal insulation thickness - listed per voltage class (3.4 mm at 6/10 kV up to 10.5 mm at 26/35 kV).
Not sure which kit fits? Send us the cable voltage class, core count, cross-section and the diameter over insulation - we will confirm the exact kit number.

Kit numbering: WLN = indoor, WLW = outdoor. For MV blocks the suffix -1/x is the 1-core kit and -3/x is the 3-core kit. The deciding dimension is the diameter over insulation.

FAQ
Q: What is a cold shrink termination? A: A complete cable termination built around a pre-expanded silicone sleeve on a removable core. Pulling the core lets the sleeve contract at ambient temperature, sealing, insulating and stress-controlling the termination - with no heat.
Q: What is the difference between cold shrink and heat shrink? A: Heat-shrink products recover when you heat them (90–130 °C, torch or hot-air gun). A cold-shrink sleeve recovers when you pull the core - no flame, no heat-sensitive installation, and a factory-set, consistent radial pressure.
Q: What voltage range do these kits cover? A: From 1 kV up to 42 kV - 0.6/1 (1.2), 6/10 (12), 6.35/11 (12), 8.7/15 (17.5), 12/20 (24), 12.7/22 (24), 18/30 (36), 19/33 (36), 20.8/36 (42) and 26/35 (42) kV.
Q: What is the difference between WLN and WLW? A: WLN is the indoor termination; WLW is the outdoor termination, fitted with a rain-shed housing (see the numbered diagram).
Q: How do I pick the right kit? A: Match the voltage class, the core count, the cable cross-section and - most importantly - the diameter over insulation. Then choose WLN or WLW and whether you need a standard kit (without lugs) or a complete kit.
Q: Are lugs included? A: Terminations can be ordered as standard kits (without lugs) or as complete kits. Components for other cable types are available on request.
Q: How is the screen / armour earthed? A: By a solderless earth connection. For cables with a wire screen, the copper wires are embedded in the sealing mastic to prevent corrosion by moisture ingress.
Q: Do I need a stress cone or stress-control tube as well? A: No - the stress cone is built into the kit and controls the field geometrically at the screen cut-back.
