Why Are Bushings and Insulators Often Confused?
At first glance, bushings and insulators often look similar because both are made from insulating materials such as porcelain, glass, or composite polymers. However, they serve different purposes in electrical systems. An insulator supports an energized conductor in open air, while a bushing allows a conductor to safely pass through a grounded barrier such as a transformer tank or switchgear enclosure.
What Is an Insulator?
Insulators are commonly seen on transmission towers and utility poles. Their main job is to support the conductor while preventing current from flowing into the tower or pole structure. Unlike a bushing, an insulator does not contain a conductor passing through its center.
Typical Insulator Applications
- Transmission lines
- Distribution networks
- Railway electrification
- Substations
- Bus support systems
Bushing vs Insulator
| Item | Bushing | Insulator |
|---|---|---|
| Main Function | Conductor Feedthrough | Conductor Support |
| Internal Conductor | Yes | No |
| Typical Location | Transformer Tank | Transmission Tower |
| Mechanical Support | Secondary Function | Primary Function |
| Oil/Gas Sealing | Required | Not Required |
| Voltage Grading Design | Often Required | Usually Not Required |
FAQ
Q:What is the purpose of a transformer bushing?
A:In electric power, a bushing is a hollow electrical insulator that allows an electrical conductor to pass safely through a conducting barrier such as the case of a transformer or circuit breaker without making electrical contact with it.
Q:What happens when a bushing goes out?
A:Often overlooked, bushing failure can cause a ripple effect of pressure and wear on surrounding components. This wear ultimately results in additional loading and pressure on the steering, suspension and driveline components. Over time, this constant stress contributes to accelerated part failure.
Q: Which certification do you have?
A: The plant has passed the certificate of ISO 9001 quality system certification;
The products have passed ROHS test.
Q: Are you trading company or manufacturer?
A: We are manufacturer, having our own factories.
